| I do my best to show the colours as accurately as possible in the photos, but sometimes my phone has its own ideas ;) Please remember that shades may also look slightly different depending on your screen settings. If I have added several photos, it is worth looking at all of them together for the best colour reference. |
A thick, handmade turn-up JANKA beanie in 100% sheep’s wool, for winter and cold autumn days, in colour 118 Dark Grapes – a knit with a bold, chunky rib and a folded brim. Available pieces and made-to-order options are shown after you click your chosen size.
What conditions this beanie suits and who it is for
This is a good option for anyone looking for a thick winter beanie made from natural yarn, for colder days and longer time spent outdoors. It works well if you like a clearly defined chunky knit and a slightly oversized shape on the head, without a tight fit. Because it is made from 100% wool, it may not be the right choice for people who are very sensitive to itchiness or prefer completely “smooth-feel” materials. If your skin is prone to irritation, consider wearing this beanie over your hair or with a thin headband underneath.
How the wool feels against the head
The beanie is made from a single strand of pure sheep’s wool, with a smooth surface and a light natural fuzz, which gives the classic feel of natural wool against the skin. Wool may feel slightly itchy, especially on a very sensitive scalp, but in return it offers natural temperature regulation and helps move moisture away from the skin. The yarn is certified to Oeko-Tex Standard 100, which means it has been tested for harmful substances.
To help preserve the qualities of the yarn and the shape of the beanie, it is worth following the guidance in our wool care guide.
Shape, turn-up and how it sits
JANKA is a turn-up beanie, handmade with needles in a single rib stitch, with a bold, chunky texture. The wide folded brim creates an extra layer of knit over the ears, while also letting you adjust the depth – from a closer fit to a slightly longer, oversized line. A single strand of thick yarn creates a substantial but flexible knit that adapts to the head without feeling stiff or bulky. It will not, however, be suitable for anyone looking for a thin beanie to wear under a hood or helmet.
How it works in everyday wear
- Thick knit from a single, substantial strand – gives a strong feeling of warmth, so the beanie works well as a winter beanie and for cold autumn days.
- Wide turn-up – creates a double layer over the ears, increasing protection from frost and wind in key areas.
- Rib stitch – gives the knit elasticity, so the beanie adjusts more easily to different head shapes without strong pressure.
- 100% wool against the skin – helps move moisture away from under the beanie, which can reduce the feeling of overheating when temperatures change, for example when going indoors after being outside in the cold.
- Pilling resistance rated low to medium – this means that with frequent wear, natural bobbling may appear. It is best removed by hand or with a fabric shaver.
- Hand wash – it needs gentle care, without rubbing or wringing, but this helps the knit keep its shape and the structure of the chunky stitch for longer.
- Dark Grapes colour – a deep, calm burgundy-purple shade.
The JANKA beanie is finished with a Nitkowe Love eco-leather label, which can be easily unclipped before washing. This makes care easier and allows the knit itself to be washed separately.
