Choosing a winter beanie is not only about colour or how thick it looks. For me, the yarn matters just as much. Merino wool, cashmere and alpaca all have their own texture and character, and they can feel very different when worn directly against the skin.

Merino wool beanie – fine wool with a smooth, even feel
Merino wool is known for its fine fibres. Compared with naturally fluffy fibres such as alpaca or mohair, a merino wool beanie usually has a calmer, more even surface. This makes merino a particularly useful option if you prefer a simple knitted hat without a pronounced fluffy halo.

Cashmere beanie – fine, lightweight and all about the fibre
Cashmere has a different character again. Its fibres are exceptionally fine, which is why a cashmere beanie can feel light while still being suitable for cold-weather wear. I do not see cashmere as a material that needs to be saved for special occasions. With gentle care, it can be part of an everyday winter wardrobe.
My cashmere beanie is hand-knitted from 100% Mongolian cashmere. I use the cashmere yarn double-stranded, and the hat has a wide folded cuff and a deliberately simple shape. There are no decorative details competing with the yarn – the material itself is the main feature.
For someone looking for a minimalist hat made from a particularly fine natural fibre, cashmere is worth considering.

Alpaca beanie – naturally fluffy with a distinctive texture
Alpaca looks noticeably different from merino or cashmere. The fibres naturally create a slightly hairy, fluffy surface, often described as a halo. An alpaca beanie can therefore look soft and airy without needing a bulky knitted structure.
This natural fluffiness is also something to consider if your skin is particularly sensitive. The fine hairs of animal fibres can be noticeable to some people, so someone who is very sensitive to wool may prefer the smoother feel of a fine merino yarn.

Alpaca vs merino vs cashmere – which should you choose?
There is no single fibre that is automatically the best choice for everyone. I would choose mainly according to the texture you enjoy wearing and the look you want from your hat.
- Choose merino if you prefer a fine wool with a relatively smooth, even knitted surface.
- Choose cashmere if you are looking for an exceptionally fine natural fibre and a simple, lightweight hat where the material takes centre stage.
- Choose alpaca if you enjoy a more visibly fluffy texture and the natural halo created by animal fibres.
Skin sensitivity matters too. If you already know that you notice even very fine hairs against your forehead, I would look first at merino or cashmere rather than choosing a fluffy alpaca and mohair blend purely for its appearance.
