Which hat should you choose? A guide to handmade hats and natural yarns for different needs and seasons

Choosing the right hat is about much more than style. The yarn determines warmth, breathability, comfort and how your skin reacts. As a handmade knitwear maker working exclusively with natural fibres for years, I talk to customers every day about their needs and sensitivities. That’s why I created this guide – to help you choose a hat that truly suits you.
Why the yarn matters so much
A hat touches sensitive areas like the scalp, forehead and ears. That’s why the fibre choice is crucial. Natural yarns regulate temperature, allow the skin to breathe and provide comfort without overheating.
At NitkoweLove, I use various natural yarns and refined blends, because there is no single “perfect” hat for everyone.
Baby merino hats – softness you can feel
Baby merino comes from the first shearing of lambs and is exceptionally fine and soft. It does not itch and is ideal for sensitive skin.
Perfect if:
your skin is very sensitive,
you don’t tolerate regular wool well,
you need a hat for autumn, early winter or spring,
you wear hats for many hours a day.
Merino hats – versatile and practical
Merino wool is elastic, durable and comfortable. It regulates temperature well and works perfectly for everyday use.
A great choice for:
active lifestyles,
daily wear,
autumn and winter,
one reliable hat for many occasions.
Alpaca hats – warmth without heaviness
Alpaca fibre is warmer than traditional wool yet very lightweight. It contains no lanolin, making it suitable for people allergic to lanolin.
Please note: alpaca naturally has fine hairs that may feel slightly noticeable for very sensitive people. In that case, baby merino or cashmere may be a better option.
Cashmere hats – elegance, luxury and exceptional softness
Cashmere is one of the most luxurious natural fibres. It is incredibly soft, light and warm. Cashmere hats feel wonderful from the very first wear.
They require the same care as other wool hats, and their greatest strengths are elegance, refinement and unmatched softness.
Sheep wool hats – classic with a modern twist
Sheep wool can be stylish and contemporary. Thick, trendy stitches look beautiful and add character.
These hats are:
very warm,
durable,
popular with teenagers and adults alike.
Mohair and mohair–silk blends – light and elegant
Mohair blended with silk is airy, warm and refined. Silk adds smoothness and a subtle sheen.
Ideal for:
cool days without severe frost,
elegant outfits,
those who love lightness and delicacy.
Handmade hats – why it truly matters
I have already made hundreds of hats, so it’s hard to believe NitkoweLove is created by just one person. Thanks to this experience, I offer hats I fully trust – tested, wearable and beautifully finished.
By choosing my work:
you support a small, heartfelt business,
you avoid mass production,
you get a product made to last for years.
