How to Care for a Wool Beanie: Washing, Drying and Storage

A wool beanie does not need complicated care, but it helps to know what wool really dislikes. Gentle washing, minimal friction and proper drying are the most important things if you want the knitted fabric to keep its shape and look good for longer. Merino beanies, alpaca beanies and hats made from more traditional wool can all behave differently, so it is always worth checking the care instructions for the specific yarn as well. In practice, a few simple habits are enough to help a wool hat last for many seasons.
How often should you wash a wool beanie?
Not after every wear. If your beanie is not dirty, it is usually enough to leave it in a well-ventilated place and let it air out. Washing is useful when you notice dirt, traces of make-up, skincare products or perspiration, or when the hat simply feels as though it needs refreshing.
This is one of the differences between natural wool and many everyday clothes that automatically go into the washing machine after one wear. Washing less often also means less mechanical stress on the fibres and therefore gentler treatment of the knitted fabric.
How to hand wash a wool beanie
The safest method is usually hand washing in cool or lukewarm water. Fill a bowl or sink with water, add a small amount of gentle wool wash and immerse the beanie. There is no need to knead or rub it vigorously – a calm soak is much kinder to the fibres.
Avoid scrubbing, stretching and sudden changes in water temperature. When you remove the beanie from the water, do not wring it out. Gently press out excess water with your hands. If it is still very wet, place it on a clean towel and press lightly, or roll it carefully inside the towel.
Even if a particular yarn is labelled superwash and the manufacturer allows machine washing, the construction and shape of a handmade beanie are also worth considering. For finished NitkoweLove hats, I still recommend calm, gentle hand washing as the safest method.
SOAK – the wash I use for my beanies
I wash every beanie in SOAK after I finish making it, so it arrives with you already washed and ready to wear. I also like SOAK because you only need a very small amount, which means one bottle lasts me a very long time. It is a no-rinse wash, so there is also less need to handle and move the wet knitted fabric.
If you would like to use the same product for caring for your beanie later, you can find SOAK at NitkoweLove.
SOAK is useful for more than wool. It can also be used for other delicate items, including lingerie and silk blouses, always following the garment's own care label. For hand-washable silk, the manufacturer recommends checking colourfastness first and using a much shorter soaking time of no more than about 4–5 minutes.

How to dry a wool beanie without losing its shape
After washing, lay the beanie flat on a dry towel and gently arrange it back into its natural shape. Do not hang a wet wool hat on a line – wet knitted fabric is heavier and may stretch unnecessarily.
Do not try to speed up drying on a radiator, in a tumble dryer or with very hot air. Wool is much happier drying slowly at room temperature. If the towel becomes very wet, you can replace it with a dry one after a while.
Why can a wool beanie shrink or felt?
For many wool yarns, the most problematic combination is moisture, heat and strong friction. Under these conditions the fibres can begin to catch together, making the fabric denser and reducing its size. With yarn intended for felting this process is used deliberately, but in a finished beanie it is usually something we want to avoid.
There is therefore no need to scrub a hat aggressively in an attempt to get it cleaner. If there is a local stain, it is better to treat that area gently than to rub the entire knitted fabric.
What should you do if your wool beanie starts to pill?
Pilling does not automatically mean that a hat is poor quality. Natural fibres can work their way towards the surface during wear and form small pills where there is friction. You may notice them particularly where the hat rubs against a hood, scarf or coat collar.
If you want to refresh the surface, you can use a fabric shaver very gently. Place the beanie flat and do not press the shaver hard against the knitted fabric. Pilling and fuzzing really deserve a separate article, as different fibres behave differently over time.
How should you store a wool beanie?
At the end of the season, wash the beanie, let it dry completely and only then put it away. Do not store damp knitwear or keep it sealed for a long time without any airflow. It is best to store a beanie folded or lying flat rather than hanging it, as prolonged stretching may affect its shape.
Is caring for a wool beanie difficult?
No. In practice, the most important thing is often to do less: do not wash it unnecessarily, do not scrub it, do not wring it and do not speed up drying with high heat. Natural fibres need slightly different care from everyday machine-washed clothing, but after a few washes it becomes a very simple routine.
If you are still choosing your hat, you can browse the handmade beanies at NitkoweLove. You can compare fibres, shapes and different weights there, and the beanie section also includes help with choosing a style that suits your needs.
Frequently asked questions
Can you wash a wool beanie in a washing machine?
It depends on the yarn and the manufacturer's care instructions. Some superwash yarns can be machine washed, but for a handmade beanie gentle hand washing is usually the safest way to preserve its shape. That is what I recommend :)
What temperature should you use to wash a wool beanie?
Cool or lukewarm water is best, and sudden changes in temperature should be avoided. Hot water combined with friction can encourage wool to shrink or felt.
Do you need to rinse a wool beanie after washing?
That depends on the product you use. Traditional detergents should be used according to the manufacturer's instructions, while SOAK is a no-rinse wash and does not need to be rinsed out.
Can you dry a wool beanie on a radiator?
It is better not to. The safest method is to lay the hat flat on a towel and let it dry slowly at room temperature, away from a direct source of strong heat.
Should you wash a wool beanie before wearing it for the first time?
NitkoweLove beanies do not need to be washed when they arrive. I wash every hat after making it, so it is already clean and ready to wear when I send it to you. With hats from other makers or brands, follow the care information provided with the product.
